OpenAI's dot agent reportedly burns 300K tokens a day with no prompts
TechNews, citing a report from The Register, says AI agent security and governance firm Geordie has been continuously testing dot, the always-on personal AI agent OpenAI launched in September, and found it consumes large amounts of tokens even when the user issues no instructions. Geordie AI officer Hanah-Marie Darley said that with only read-only permissions and no connected personal apps, email or Slack, dot generated 155 separate activity sequences and used more than 300,000 tokens in a day, starting agents on its own — running at least a user-facing primary agent plus a background agent that gathers data and can spawn sub-agents as needed. She estimated that dot running on OpenAI's Astra model consumed about 200,000 tokens at roughly US$5–10 per day, and advised companies not to give agents personal information they would not send by email or let them use a personal credit card.
The report warns that employees are likely to bring personal agents into work environments, while companies often underestimate how many agents are actually running and the resulting background token costs.
