ByteDance’s Maoxiang Tops China’s iOS Generative-AI Revenue Rankings
Sensor Tower reported that Maoxiang, ByteDance’s AI companion app, ranked first among generative-AI apps in China’s iOS market for 2026 Q1, with cumulative in-app purchases exceeding $22 million. Built by ByteDance’s Flow team on Doubao, the app lets users customize virtual characters and engage in chat, story progression, and relationship-based role-play. User interviews also described concerns about repetitive responses and declining role-play quality.
The Sensor Tower ranking shows that specialized AI companion applications can attract substantial consumer spending, even as interviewed users question their value relative to general-purpose AI platforms.
