  1. Kroger to cut 37% of corporate roles in three-year tech push

Kroger plans to cut about 3,000 corporate roles over the next three years, roughly 37% of its 8,200 corporate employees, according to a memo CEO Greg Foran sent staff on Monday, 12 October. Foran cited simplification and technology as the two reasons, saying "technology is reshaping what's possible," though the memo does not specify how many roles AI will replace. Kroger outlined an AI strategy in September that includes demand forecasting, personalised savings, meal and cart planning tools and AI agents to help store teams prioritise daily tasks, plus AI training for more than 400,000 employees.

  2. Google's Universal Cart launches in the US

Google said on October 15 that Universal Cart, the AI shopping cart it previewed at I/O in May, is now rolling out to US users across Google Search and the Gemini app, letting people save products from multiple retailers into one cart that persists across Google services. Built on Google's Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion continually refreshed product listings, it sends price-drop and restock alerts, surfaces relevant promo codes, and can weigh saved credit card perks via Google Wallet to suggest a payment method. Checkout runs through Google Pay or by transferring items back to the merchant's own cart, with Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and some Shopify merchants supported at launch; Google says Gmail and YouTube integrations are planned but gave no timeline.

  3. AI dev firm Vibetech exposed 13.7M records from past breaches

Security researcher Jeremiah Fowler found an unauthenticated database holding 13.7 million records drawn from previous data breaches and leaks, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, passwords and bank account details. The archive was sorted by company, with almost 8 million records tied to an AT&T leak plus Amazon (1.2 million), Walmart (420,000), BluBank Digital Bank (24,000), PayPal (18,000), the FBI Employee Directory (4,084) and Interpol (929). Fowler linked the database's IP address to a data intelligence platform operated or developed by Indian software development platform Vibetech, which he speculates was collecting breach datasets and accidentally left them public; after he notified the company and its hosting provider, the database was restricted, and a day later the IP showed an ISMS compliance platform dashboard instead.

  4. Qwen Go, Muse and Manus: the economics of personal AI agents

A TMTPost analysis compares how three personal AI agents plan to pay for themselves: Alibaba's Qwen Go opened experience applications on Oct 13, with gray-test tasks ranging from car-maintenance quotes to negotiating flight-delay compensation with ticketing support, backed by Alibaba's opening of Taobao and Tmall's 4 billion-plus product catalog plus orders, logistics and after-sales, and April access to China Eastern search, booking, seat selection and check-in. The piece cites an Oct 12 Morgan Stanley model putting Meta's Muse at roughly $445 per user per year against about $70 in average annual revenue per global Meta user, with the $20 subscription tier, at $240 a year, covering only about 54% of cost; Citi projects Muse revenue above $27 billion by 2030, about $23 billion of it transaction-related with commissions over 80%. The author also notes Manus launched Flex on Sept 29, letting users bring their own model API keys and separating inference fees from execution service fees, and cites a 32% runtime-cost reduction for Cascade versus an older system in one test configuration.

  5. Amazon's $220B AI capex push leaves stock trading at a discount to Walmart

The Information argues that investor enthusiasm for semiconductor stocks and blue-sky vision companies like SpaceX appears to have pulled money out of long-established tech stocks, leaving Amazon looking cheap. The outlet notes Amazon is spending $220 billion this year on capital expenditures to build out AI data center capacity, a risk that it says still does not justify Amazon trading at a discount to Walmart. Citing Koyfin data, it puts Amazon at about 29 times forward earnings versus 37 times for Walmart, while Walmart's revenue is expected to grow about 5.6% this year, roughly a third of Amazon's estimated growth rate.

  6. Sierra publishes draft Personal Agent Protocol 'Poppy' with 35 more partners

After first announcing the Personal Agent Protocol with Meta, Genesys, Instinct, NiCE, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart, Sierra has now published a draft of the protocol, codenamed Poppy, along with 35 additional design partners including OpenAI, Mastercard, Visa, Bank of America, Target, Notion and Cloudflare. The draft defines five building blocks — discovery, sessions, sign-in, one session across every channel, and getting the job done — and is built on existing standards such as OAuth, JSON Web Tokens, HTTPS, OpenAPI and MCP, so companies can connect once rather than building a separate link for each personal agent. Sierra also says that at Sierra Summit, Rocket VP of Product Alex McGillis demonstrated the protocol live using Meta's personal agent Muse to complete a mortgage pre-approval with Rocket's own agent, a demo the company describes itself.

  7. Meta, Sierra and partners launch Personal Agent Protocol for AI agent commerce

Enterprise AI startup Sierra said on Oct. 6 that it is developing the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP) with Meta and companies including Walmart, Shopify and Stripe — an open standard governing how user-authorized personal AI agents access businesses' websites, APIs and services. Sierra co-founder Bret Taylor said the protocol is designed to handle authentication, empower consumers and give companies visibility into what personal agents do through their sites, APIs or company agents, and that it is open for anyone to implement; Meta's David Singleton compared it to email as a universal standard. The move follows Amazon blocking Meta's Muse agent from its retail site and reports of agents hitting anti-bot blocks on other retail sites, where users often cannot tell whether a block is intentional or accidental.
