  1. a16z's 'Wallet Wars': who lets AI agents pay as you

a16z published a newsletter by Terry Angelos titled "Wallet Wars" arguing that personal agents such as Instinct, OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse are moving assistants into text messages and familiar apps, and that completing tasks requires something intelligence alone cannot provide: permission to pay. The piece splits the contest in two: who helps an agent pay, and the more consequential question of who lets it transact as the user. It describes Stripe's Link handing agents single-use virtual cards, which can complete a purchase while breaking the link to the original card's loyalty benefits and merchant relationship, and points to card-network efforts — Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard AgentPay and AMEX ACE — plus a proposed scoped agentic token held by a trusted wallet as a more open path. A Chinese translation was published by Huxiu AI, crediting the a16z original.

  2. Sierra publishes draft Personal Agent Protocol 'Poppy' with 35 more design partners

Sierra published a draft of its Personal Agent Protocol, known as Poppy, and announced 35 additional design partners including OpenAI, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Target and Wells Fargo, which Sierra says will take part in the design process and give feedback. Sierra said the protocol had been announced that Tuesday with Meta, Genesys, Instinct, NiCE, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart. The draft builds on OAuth, JWTs, HTTPS, OpenAPI and MCP, and defines discovery via a standard file, sessions, sign-in and one session spanning a company's website, APIs and its own agent, so businesses can identify an agent and limit what it may do. Sierra also described a live demo at Sierra Summit in which Rocket's VP of Product used Meta's personal agent, Muse, to obtain a mortgage pre-approval through the protocol.

  3. NYT v. OpenAI docs renew debate on paying for AI's news use

Newly unsealed filings in The New York Times' copyright suit against OpenAI and Microsoft show OpenAI researchers pitched president Greg Brockman on ways around the Times' paywall — he replied "nice" — while a Microsoft executive described the company's mass web scraping in 2023 as "unprecedented labor theft." A commentary piece argues that monthly subscriptions or free access cannot match AI agents that take a single paragraph or data point, and that micropayments — backed by verifiable agent identity, scoped authorization, intent confirmation, anti-fraud checks, audit logs and dispute handling — may be the practical fix. It notes Mastercard, Visa, Stripe and Tempo have begun rolling out machine-to-machine payment protocols and standards.
