Citi, Bank of America Said to Restrict AI Agents' Access to Customer Accounts
Citigroup and Bank of America have reportedly followed JPMorgan Chase in restricting third-party AI agents from accessing customer accounts, according to a 36Kr report citing media reports. Banks have told regulators they worry such agents could move idle cash into higher-yield products and drain deposits; JPMorgan said on its Oct. 13 earnings call that it would block AI agent access because of the risk from thousands of malicious agents and is studying safer ways to allow it. The scrutiny follows Meta's Sept. 8 launch of its Muse personal AI agent, which can initiate payments, compare prices and move funds through external connectors, though Meta requires user confirmation for sensitive actions, and Bloomberg interpreted a Sept. 22 financial-sector selloff as reflecting investor concern that such agents could erode consumer inertia.
JPMorgan said such access is unsafe and that it is studying safer implementations, while the reported restrictions highlight banks' concern that external agents could move deposits.
