Visa, BILL and Billtrust launch live AI-agent invoice payment pilot
Visa, BILL and Billtrust have started a live pilot in which AI agents pay approved supplier invoices end to end through suppliers' own payment portals, processing real transactions between buyers on BILL and suppliers on Billtrust. BILL's payment agent is registered through Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and Agentic Directory and pays with tokenised card credentials within limits set by the buyer's approved payment instructions; Billtrust uses the same protocol to recognise and authenticate the agent in place of CAPTCHAs and other bot-blocking tools, so buyers no longer share portal logins. The companies call it the first live pilot of its kind, a characterization no independent party is cited as confirming, and they disclosed no transaction numbers or date for a wider launch. The pilot was announced alongside two other Visa commercial payment offerings, SESA 2.0 supplier spend analytics and Visa Commercial Fraud Solutions, whose Payment Controls is available to eligible issuers while Virtual Authentication and Supplier Validation are in pilot and expected to be fully available in 2027.
The companies describe the supplier-portal step as one of the last manual parts of accounts payable, and Visa says the pilot's key question is whether an AI agent's identity and behaviour can be independently verified rather than whether AI can initiate a payment.

Visa, BILL and Billtrust have started a live pilot in which AI agents pay approved supplier invoices from start to finish. The agents pay through suppliers’ own payment portals. The three companies call it the first live pilot of its kind.
Until now, many of those portals needed a person to log in and type in the payment. The companies announced the pilot in a joint release on Tuesday. The pilot is already processing real transactions between buyers on BILL and suppliers on Billtrust.
