   NIO's Li Bin sets payment, perceived safety as autonomous-driving 'second half' tests

   Speaking at the 2026 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference in a dialogue session, NIO founder, chairman and CEO Li Bin said autonomous driving's "second half" should be judged by two verifiable measures: whether users are willing to pay for the function, and whether they can clearly perceive it as safer than human driving. He said that if users will not pay, autonomous driving creates no real user value however well it is described, and he has previously argued that NIO's assisted-driving subscription funds fulfillment, training, connectivity and upgrade costs. Li also said NIO's assisted-driving system, built on a world-model architecture plus closed-loop reinforcement learning, is deployed on more than 950,000 smart EVs, with over 9.14 billion km of assisted driving, 112 million hours of use and 9.07 million potential accidents avoided or mitigated; he cited internal data putting average safety mileage in driver-plus-system operation at 8 times human driving, and four insurers' data showing accident-related losses falling, reported by IT之家 and 36Kr as either over 30% or 38.4%.
