   Texas data center backlash becomes a major election issue

   The Verge reports that local opposition to AI data center development is spreading across Texas, with projects facing resistance in Taylor, Temple, and San Marcos, which has banned the facilities. An August poll found that 57% of Texans opposed data center construction, including 43% of Republicans, 75% of Democrats, and 54% of independents. The state has introduced permit pauses and infrastructure-cost rules, but advocacy groups say some projects are still being processed despite Governor Greg Abbott’s directives.

   Texas Suspends 17 Data Center Permits and Shuts STEERS Portal

   Texas temporarily shut down the STEERS electronic filing application after watchdog reporting said construction permits for data-center projects continued despite Governor Greg Abbott’s pause request. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality also moved 17 data-center-related stormwater construction permits from active to suspended. FracTracker Alliance researcher Sam Law said the portal had continued issuing approvals, including for OpenAI and Amazon projects, but TCEQ did not respond to 404 Media’s request for comment.

   Texas Data Center Permits Continue Despite Abbott's Pause

   Public Citizen and FracTracker Alliance said Texas environmental regulators continued reviewing more than a dozen data-center permits after Governor Greg Abbott ordered a pause on September 21. 404 Media's review of TCEQ records found air-emission certificates, stormwater approvals and expedited reviews for projects in Houston, Abilene, Barstow, Royse City and Irving, including infrastructure for OpenAI's Stargate project. Abbott's office said no new permits had been approved, while TCEQ did not respond to 404 Media's questions.
