Colao: Europe has under 2GW of AI compute, must simplify rules

AI summary

Vittorio Colao, the former Vodafone CEO and Italy's ex-minister for technological innovation, said at Turin's Wave by Vento event that Europe has less than 2 gigawatts of AI computing capacity and must not miss the next technology wave. He called the EU's AI Act well-intentioned but too complicated to implement, defended the Digital Services Act and copyright protection for creators, and said rules for a startup's first three to five years should be far simpler. He also called for a genuine single capital market so European companies do not have to list in the US.

In-depth insight

Colao's remarks capture a widening European argument that compute capacity and administrative burden, not talent, are the main brakes on the region's AI ambitions.

Europe has less than 2 gigawatts of AI computing capacity and needs more, former Vodafone chief executive Vittorio Colao said. He spoke at a closed-door press Q&A at Wave by Vento in Turin on Friday, the event’s last day.

“Europe missed the big digital wave. Fine, 20 years,” Colao said.
