Universal Music Group licenses catalog to AI game-music service TYGER

AI summary

Universal Music Group will license recordings and songs from its record and publishing catalogues to TYGER, an AI service that adapts music to on-screen gameplay, the two companies said. Selected UMG tracks will join TYGER's paid on-demand subscription, and some recordings will also appear on its ad-supported free tier. TYGER says its technology changes licensed tracks in real time to match game action, that it runs alongside games rather than inside them, and that it works on PC, console and mobile. The companies said UMG is the first major music company to license the service; TYGER says it is in closed beta across more than 20 games with over 540 million combined monthly players and a library of more than 400,000 songs, figures it provided. TYGER plans to relaunch later this year with an updated free tier and a new subscription offer.

In-depth insight

The deal gives UMG's catalog a route into games through AI-adaptive music, and the companies say UMG is the first major music company to license TYGER, a characterization they made themselves.

Universal Music Group (UMG) will license music from its artists and songwriters to TYGER. The service uses AI to make songs follow the action in a video game as people play.

The two companies announced the deal today, with UMG the first major music company to license the service, they said.

Under the agreement, selected recordings and songs from UMG’s record and publishing catalogues will join TYGER’s paid, on-demand subscription. Some UMG recordings will also appear on its free tier, which carries ads.
