Taipower chairman Tseng Wen-sheng said at a pre-show press conference for the 2026 Taiwan International Net Zero and Smart Energy Week that AI-driven computing demand is forcing the domestic power industry to adopt the tech sector's faster decision-making rhythm, with investment planning horizons compressed from roughly ten years to five or even three. He said future supply depends not only on whether generation capacity is sufficient but on whether the grid can deliver power to where it is needed and coordinate with renewables and storage, noting that Taiwan's computing demand may not be concentrated among large cloud providers because some companies will build their own data centers or run workloads on-premises for confidentiality. Tseng said existing resources and plans can cover industry needs, citing Taiwan's global ranking of third in 2024 and sixth in 2025 for gas-fired unit investment, while Taipower spokesperson Huang Mei-lien said reports that large users such as TSMC might be asked to fund power plants remain a conceptual discussion and do not shift supply responsibility to manufacturers.
