Exoskeletons move from labs to scenic trails as consumer rentals grow
During this year's National Day holiday, more than 50 mountain scenic areas across China rolled out lower-limb exoskeleton rentals; one merchant at Taishan's Zhongtianmen service point quoted 80 yuan for three hours with a full charge and said the device can be strapped on in about ten seconds. Ministry of Commerce data cited by the article showed sales of exoskeleton assist devices on key platforms rose 12.8% year over year from October 1 to 6, ahead of 10.4% growth for outdoor sports gear. The piece argues that AI gait recognition and real-time assistance tuning have turned exoskeletons from passive tools into adaptive devices, but weight, public perception and profitability remain open questions, and the industry is still at an early stage with shipments and revenue but limited realized profit.
IDC data cited in the article puts China's 2025 exoskeleton shipments at about 26,000 units, with consumer assistance models accounting for 72.8%, or nearly 19,000 units, making it the fastest-growing segment.
