OpenAI acquires Orchestra Bio to add drug-development agents to Rosalind
OpenAI said it has acquired Orchestra Bio, a platform that helps biopharma teams coordinate drug development, and will combine its team and technology with Rosalind, OpenAI's AI models and tools for life sciences research. Financial terms were not disclosed; Chinese outlets report Orchestra was founded in San Francisco in 2022 and had raised about $20 million from investors including a16z, 8VC and Insight Partners as of August 2025. OpenAI says Orchestra's agents are designed to track trials and flag affected timelines when something goes wrong, such as a failed production batch, and that Rosalind already counts Moderna and Novo Nordisk as customers. OpenAI frames the deal as a step toward agents that connect scientific findings with the studies, decisions and next steps needed to advance a potential medicine.
OpenAI says developing a new medicine takes roughly 10 to 15 years on average in the United States and that teams often rely on disconnected systems, so the deal pushes its agents into the coordination layer of drug development rather than only the science.
OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio(opens in a new window), a platform that helps biopharma teams coordinate the complex process of drug development. We’re bringing Orchestra’s team and technology together with Rosalind, our AI models and tools for life sciences research. Our goal is to help scientists make discoveries and manage the work needed to turn them into treatments that reach patients sooner.
Developing a new medicine is extraordinarily complex, taking roughly 10 to 15 years on average from target discovery to regulatory approval in the United States. Beyond the science, teams must orchestrate programs across internal departments and external partners, often relying on disconnected systems. We’re now at an inflection point where AI can help take on these specialized tasks and complex workflows.
Bringing Rosalind and Orchestra together
Rosalind brings our AI models and tools to life sciences researchers. GPT‑Rosalind helps scientists reason through questions in biology and chemistry. Rosalind Workbench connects those capabilities with scientific tools and data to help researchers analyze results and plan experiments.
Orchestra brings a team with experience across biotech, software, and AI, along with a platform built to coordinate drug development. Together, we aim to build agents that help teams connect scientific findings with the studies, decisions, and next steps needed to advance a potential medicine.
