Mistral CEO warns Europe against quitting frontier AI
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch warned that Europe would receive the “leftovers” if it stopped building frontier AI models, while reliance on American or Chinese models could create a “big trade balance problem.” Mensch and DeepL CEO Jarek Kutylowski argue that Europe needs its own models and AI value chain. By contrast, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Legora CEO Max Junestrand favor capturing value through applications. The Commission has begun work on seven AI compute hubs as part of a €30bn project.
The debate highlights a strategic choice for Europe’s AI policy: invest in frontier-model development and infrastructure or focus on applications built on models developed elsewhere.

Mistral’s chief executive, Arthur Mensch, has warned that Europe will get “leftovers” if it stops building frontier AI models. Apps built on American or Chinese models would also give Europe a “big trade balance problem”, he said on 20 October.
Mensch spoke on the European Technology Network talk show, Pieter Haeck reported for Politico. He and DeepL’s chief executive, Jarek Kutylowski, are pushing back against European leaders. Some of them say Europe should drop out of the race for the most advanced models.
