South Korea inaugurates Hangang AI supercomputer
South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and KISTI inaugurated the sixth-generation national supercomputer Hangang, with public service scheduled to begin on December 16. The 382.5 billion won system has 8,496 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper superchips, 9,936 CPUs, 205 PB of storage and a 400 Gbps network; DongA Science reported a measured 342.6 PFLOPS and an estimated global rank of 12th in June. Its budget reportedly rose by about 50% as GPU and memory price inflation made procurement more difficult.
Hangang adds substantial CPU-and-GPU computing capacity for South Korean AI research, including the K-Moonshot program, while its procurement costs illustrate the effect of AI-driven hardware inflation.
