Google AI Search Disrupts Publisher Traffic
The Verge reports that Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, alongside changes to search rankings, have coincided with declines in traffic and click-through rates for online publishers. Data cited in the report shows The New York Times’ search-traffic share falling from 44% to 35.5% over three years, while Digital Content Next members reported Google traffic losses ranging from 1% to 25% between May and June 2025. Google says overall search click volume remained relatively stable and disputes the claim that AI search is harming the web. The company has made sources more prominent in AI responses, says 400 publishers are participating in its News AI licensing pilot, and is testing payments for content used in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The reported traffic declines, source-presentation changes and content-licensing pilot indicate significant changes in how Google search refers publishers and compensates them for content used in AI features. Publishers are also facing regulatory scrutiny and lawsuits over the effects of Google’s AI search features.
