Microsoft science chief Peter Lee to join Mercedes F1 team as AI advisor
Peter Lee, the departing president of Microsoft's science division, plans to join the Mercedes Formula 1 team in a newly created AI advisor role, Fortune reported. Lee told Fortune that title details are still being discussed, but he expects a one-year contract with an option to extend for another year. He said his focus will cover four areas: using AI to help solve racing-related physics problems, breaking down data and organizational silos across departments, building finance and forecasting models, and advising on how racing regulators might govern AI in the future. Lee spent 16 years at Microsoft, where he worked on projects including the InnerEye system for automatically annotating tumors and healthy tissue, and took part in assessing GPT-4's potential medical uses before its public release.
It is a senior-talent move that signals AI expertise shifting from big-tech research groups into motorsport engineering and the wider sports industry.
