ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now read and control your tabs
OpenAI has upgraded ChatGPT's Google Chrome extension so it can look at the tabs you already have open and use that context to answer questions or compare information across pages. With permission, it can also control those tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and organize or group open tabs. The extension adds a sidebar with the full ChatGPT experience and conversation history, similar to Chrome's built-in Gemini integration, while Work mode uses OpenAI's Computer Use architecture to act on pages directly. OpenAI says availability depends on its rollout batches and workspace settings.
Browsers hold users' context and logged-in sessions, so putting task execution inside Chrome pushes ChatGPT from answering questions toward acting on the web — and puts it in direct competition with Google's own Gemini integration.
