Ukrainian drones strike Yandex data center housing two AI supercomputers
On October 8, Ukrainian drones struck Yandex's data center in Sasovo, Ryazan region, Russia, sparking a fire and forcing the company to shut the facility down. The site is one of Yandex's five major data centers, hosting tens of thousands of servers plus two of its three AI supercomputers — the Nvidia A100-based Chervonenkis and Lyapunov — which have been used to train YandexGPT. Yandex has not said whether the supercomputers were damaged, but Yandex Cloud and consumer services including Mail, Disk, Pay and Market reported disruptions.
If the machines were destroyed, Russia's already export-constrained AI compute would shrink further, potentially pushing Yandex toward Chinese infrastructure for future model training.
