Google open-sources Android Skills, modular SKILL.md instructions for coding agents
Google has published the android/skills repository on GitHub, offering AI-optimized modular instructions in the open-standard SKILL.md format so agents can follow Android development best practices from developer.android.com. Google says the skills target use cases and workflows where evaluations show LLMs underperform, rather than well-established areas such as basic Jetpack Compose guidance. Developers can install one or all skills via Android CLI, or add them as a plugin to Claude Code and Codex; by default they land in the Gemini and Antigravity skill directories.
It shows a platform vendor packaging its own guidance as agent-ready skills, which could shape how AI coding tools perform on Android work.
Android skills
Android skills are a dedicated repository of AI-optimized, modular instructions and resources, to help agents better understand and execute specific patterns that follow the best practices and guidance on Android development from developer.android.com.
Android skills follow the open-standard agent skills - markdown files (SKILL.md) that provide a technical specification of a task, and ground LLMs with information on specialized domains and workflows.
Our Android skill development focuses on use cases and workflows where evaluations show LLMs underperform. We aren't prioritizing well-established areas where LLMs are already proficient, such as basic Jetpack Compose best practices.
