Gartner: AI infrastructure spending may outrun revenue, $4T write-downs by 2032
A Gartner report, "Prepare for AI Market Consolidation: Capital Write-Downs Could Exceed $4 Trillion by 2032," estimates the AI industry will spend nearly $1 trillion on infrastructure in 2026 and roughly another $6 trillion from 2027 through 2030. Senior director analyst Will Sommer said enterprise and consumer AI revenue is unlikely to cover all of that planned capital spending: at a 12% return threshold, AI data center operators would need $8.5 trillion in total revenue, while AI-data-center-attributable revenue over the period tops out at about $3.6 trillion. Gartner therefore expects asset write-downs and consolidation, with new cloud providers offering "GPU-as-a-service" most exposed, estimating that after 2030 about 80% of new cloud providers will not survive as independent companies, while hyperscalers with broader businesses are better able to absorb the adjustment.
The forecast puts the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending—and whether actual revenue can absorb it—at the center of consolidation and compute-supply risk.
