Formation Bio launches $600 million fund to advance clinical-stage drug assets
Formation Bio announced a $600 million drug development accelerator fund aimed at acquiring 10 to 15 Phase I or Phase II assets over the next three to five years. The company says it will use its AI systems and clinical operations team to advance the assets to key milestones within two to four years before selling them or partnering with large pharmaceutical companies. A wholly owned subsidiary will serve as the fund’s general partner, with Formation Bio committing its own capital. Limited partners include research foundations, endowments, hospitals and charities. The report says Formation Bio’s claimed AI development advantage has not been independently established. BCG’s 2024 figures put the Phase I success rate for AI-designed molecules at 80% to 90%, falling to about 40% at Phase II.
The fund is comparable in size to Formation Bio’s previous equity financing and nearly doubles its capital with little dilution to the parent, according to the report. It establishes a hybrid strategy combining pipeline arbitrage, AI-assisted asset selection, in-house clinical execution and fund financing, rather than a shift away from AI drug discovery.
