Opinion: AI short dramas have as much right to burn compute as anyone
An opinion column republished by Huxiu AI (originally from the WeChat account Bingchuan Sixianglu, by Chen Bai) pushes back on the viral claim that more than half of China's AI compute goes into making short dramas. It traces the claim to a June investor-relations record from Chinese Online stating that AI short dramas and video generation account for 55% of domestic token consumption, e-commerce and marketing 24% and software development 15%, and argues token consumption does not equal physical compute share and that the figures lack a verifiable methodology. The author contends that if AI short dramas really are a large compute consumer, that indicates real commercial demand for generative video, and that whether compute use is reasonable should be judged by market efficiency, energy consumption, environmental cost, copyright protection and technical returns rather than by whether the content is serious.
The piece frames the compute-allocation debate around author Chen Bai's argument that entertainment demand is a legitimate use of AI resources, while acknowledging the underlying Chinese Online figures cannot be independently verified.
