AI-generated “Sanxingdui: Future Past” Opens in Theaters
The 100-minute AI-generated feature “Sanxingdui: Future Past” opened in Chinese cinemas on October 23, with all characters presented as original digital figures rather than digital copies of real actors. Shengshu Technology’s Vidu provided lead technical support, while Bona Film’s AIGMS team handled creative decisions and followed a conventional film production workflow. CatEye data reported by Zhidx showed RMB301,500 in opening-day box office and RMB401,000 cumulatively, while reports also noted weaknesses in performance consistency, emotional delivery and narrative coherence.
The release gives generative video a commercial theatrical test, showing both a working route through production, review and cinema distribution and the significant cost, consistency and audience-acceptance challenges that remain.
