AI Theatrical Film Sanxingdui: Future Past Struggles at Box Office
Bona Film’s AI theatrical feature Sanxingdui: Future Past generated RMB1.229 million in its first four days, according to CatEye, with occupancy falling to 0.2% across 8,331 screenings. The 100-minute film features original digital characters, while its producer said production costs exceeded RMB10 million. Other reports cited cumulative totals of about RMB1.21 million after several days and RMB1.348 million after six days. Bona’s second AI film, Unplanned: Arctic Action, has entered production.
The reports frame the weak theatrical performance as evidence of an unresolved gap between AI-related cost reductions and audience demand for paid cinema releases. They also note that Bona’s AI film and television business remained small and said its technology path, business model and market acceptance still require validation.
