Google Cloud unveils Gemini agent with enterprise identity, audit logs and budget caps
According to Google Cloud's materials from the Gemini at Work 2026 event on October 8, 2026, Google Cloud introduced "Gemini agent": users give it objectives rather than instructions, and it breaks down tasks across Workspace and third-party apps, selects tools and orchestrates sub-agents, running long jobs in the cloud for days and checking in with a human only at nodes such as spending money, sending mail or deleting data, returning finished work rather than an answer. Each agent gets an independent enterprise identity, mailbox, calendar, budget cap and full audit logs; the product is in private preview for enterprise customers, with no general availability date or pricing announced. The analysis argues the model layer is not locked in — Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform can pull third-party models such as Anthropic Claude through Model Garden, the ADK is declared model-agnostic and is open-sourced with native A2A protocol support — so the contest is about governance and who owns acceptance, not about a single impressive demo.
The main reason enterprises buy agents is shifting from "how smart is it" to "is it controllable, auditable and accountable," which shapes who holds sway over the enterprise market.
