  1. Microsoft Opens Voluntary Departure Program to About 60,000 Staff

Microsoft has opened a voluntary departure program for roughly 60,000 employees in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India, according to 36氪 and 钛媒体. Eligible staff can receive compensation and leave by year-end without meeting retirement or poor-performance requirements, and Copilot-related roles are included. The number of employees expected to accept is still unknown.

  2. Microsoft launches Copilot for Legal with 20+ law-specific skills

Microsoft announced Copilot for Legal, a version of its Microsoft 365 Copilot assistant for lawyers and in-house legal teams, offering more than 20 law-specific skills delivered as plugins. In Word desktop, it reviews contracts against a company's playbook and proposes edits in tracked-changes mode that users must approve, while the cross-app Cowork workspace handles multi-document work such as obligation tracking, agreement comparison and case timelines. Microsoft said the capabilities, offered in a Frontier stage since April, have been used by more than 1,800 people to generate nearly 100,000 edit suggestions, about 70% of which were adopted — figures from Microsoft's own usage and internal evaluation, not independent testing. Partners including Bloomberg Law, Thomson Reuters HighQ, DocuSign, Harvey, Relativity, iManage and NetDocuments supply plugins, and Microsoft says AI output still needs professional verification.

  3. Microsoft's new Office chief pushed to use Anthropic models to fix Copilot

The Information reports that in the summer of 2025 Microsoft was fielding customer complaints that its AI assistant Copilot was buggy and not good enough at automating work in Excel or PowerPoint. Charles Lamanna, then a Microsoft president, proposed to CEO Satya Nadella that the company consider paying for AI models from Anthropic to make Copilot work better, saying the idea was “heresy” at the time. According to the report, Lamanna is now Microsoft's new Office chief and won over Nadella by fixing Copilot.

  4. From Siri to Meta Muse: a 15-year history of AI assistants

This 36Kr-republished feature frames 15 years of AI assistants as five eras: Siri (2011) understanding spoken commands, Amazon's Echo/Alexa (2014) making computing ambient in the home, Microsoft 365 Copilot (2023) bringing LLMs into knowledge work, OpenAI's Codex CLI (April 2025) taking on whole engineering tasks, and Meta's personal agent Muse, unveiled at Connect in September 2026, which aims to act on a user's long-term intent. It says Meta negotiated a Manus deal in late 2025 worth more than $2 billion that did not close after roughly half a year of review, and that Muse is meant to remember context, run in the background and extend into WhatsApp, Meta's social apps and AI glasses. The author also describes China's 2026 office-AI race — Tencent WorkBuddy, Alibaba's Qwen Office and ByteDance's Doubao Work — as shifting from "embedding" AI to "taking over" tasks, and cites OpenAI figures that Codex could run roughly 25-hour tasks producing about 30,000 lines of code by late 2025.
