  1. Micron opens second Taiwan advanced packaging and test plant (AATT2)

Micron held a ceremony in Taichung on Oct. 15 to mark the start of operations at Micron Advanced Assembly and Test Taiwan 2 (AATT2), its second advanced packaging and testing plant in Taiwan, which the company says will strengthen its advanced packaging and test capacity for high bandwidth memory (HBM) and AI-driven demand. In its latest earnings report, Micron said most of its 2027 HBM capacity is already booked by customers and expects HBM demand growth to keep outpacing conventional DRAM through 2028, while its HBM advanced packaging plant in Singapore is expected to start contributing capacity from 2027. Attendees included President Lai Ching-te, Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin, Micron president and COO Manish Bhatia, Micron Taiwan chairman Lu Tung-hui, and customers and ecosystem partners such as Asus, MSI and MediaTek.

  2. Nvidia RTX 50-series GPU prices spike in Japan, up to 41% above US listings

Retail prices for Nvidia's RTX 50-series GPUs in Japan have risen sharply, according to Tom's Hardware and cnBeta. Tom's Hardware compared Japanese retailer listings with Amazon US prices and found the Japanese figures were 5.66% to 41.1% higher pre-tax, with the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB showing the largest gap, while cnBeta said the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB went from about ¥85,000 (~$530) at launch to ¥139,800–205,000 (~$881–1,292), a rise of up to roughly 144%. Both reports cite memory supply constraints and strong AI compute demand as likely factors, and note reports that Nvidia plans to halt RTX 5090 production, while cautioning that these are retail quotes and do not necessarily reflect official MSRP changes.

  3. MSI unveils 128GB RTX Spark laptop as NVIDIA readies Oct. 16 launch

MSI launched the Prestige N16 Flip AI+, a 16-inch convertible joining NVIDIA's RTX Spark laptop lineup, with all three configurations using a 20-core RTX Spark N1X processor and a 6,144-core GPU plus a 3840×2400 Tandem OLED touchscreen (30–120Hz variable refresh, 1,000 nits peak HDR). The top model carries 128GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD, while the base version has 32GB and 1TB; pricing starts at $3,299 in the US, £3,099 in the UK for 32GB (rising to £4,099 for 64GB) and €3,899.90 in the Eurozone, with the 128GB/2TB model at €7,999.90. NVIDIA said RTX Spark laptops go on sale Friday, Oct. 16, with up to 128GB of unified memory and a claimed 1 petaflop of FP4 (sparse) AI compute, and it plans to release the agent-focused Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B model on Oct. 15 alongside optimizations for local agents such as GitHub Copilot and Perplexity. A separate TechRadar report notes the current fastest AI laptop, Dell's Pro Max 18 Plus, could be challenged by the new machines.

  4. MSI Pro Max Edge AI+ review: a $5,499 mini workstation built to run local LLMs

TechRadar reviewed the MSI Pro Max Edge AI+, a mini workstation with AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (16-core/32-thread Zen 5), Radeon 8060S integrated graphics and an XDNA NPU, paired with 128GB of unified memory (up to 96GB allocatable to the GPU) and a claimed 126 TOPS combined. The reviewer used Lemonade to download and manage local models, running Flux, Qwen3 and Qwen3 Coder to sort over 2,600 images, generate images and build a ten-page website in Visual Studio Code, and edited 4K Canon EOS R5 C footage without trouble. Drawbacks include the high price ($5,499 in the US, £5,999 in the UK), only 2.5GbE networking, and the setup effort local AI still requires.
