  1. MIT professor says OpenAI's math proofs are beyond human reading

According to a 36Kr repost of a New Zhiyuan article, OpenAI published 722 math papers at once, said to include a counterexample showing failure of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and other claimed results on well-known open problems; the report also notes the papers still await verification. On Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast, MIT associate dean of engineering education Justin Solomon said the proof is dense with technical detail, counterintuitive inequalities and extreme bounds, and that he stalled after two pages, able only to say it is "probably right." Fields Medalist Terence Tao, in a Caltech "Math 2.0" talk, offered a thought experiment about an AI-designed cancer therapy that passes formal verification and trials but whose mechanism no human understands, raising questions of interpretability and alignment.

  2. arXiv caps submissions at two per month as AI paper flood strains moderators

arXiv began enforcing a submission rate limit on October 1, 2026, allowing each submitter at most two papers per calendar month while keeping the existing cap of three active submissions at any time; the rule covers all categories, counts only the person submitting, and rejected papers still consume a slot unless deleted before publication. arXiv calls it a temporary measure: September 2026 brought 40,363 submissions, up from 20,569 two years earlier and 9,869 in September 2016, with cs.AI submissions growing more than sixfold in two years and generating nearly 9,000 support tickets. Editorial Advisory Council chair Thomas G. Dietterich said a small share of authors submit many low-quality, thin or AI-written papers, consuming a disproportionate share of volunteer moderators' time and delaying others by days or weeks; arXiv left Cornell University on July 1, 2026 to become an independent nonprofit and received $17.2 million in pledges in late September, partly to handle AI-generated content.

  3. Tao warns AI-generated math proofs are outpacing human verification

Fields Medalist Terence Tao amplified mathematician Thomas Hales' essay on the Lean theorem prover's reliability and AI, and on Mathstodon proposed a shift from "Math 1.0" to "Math 2.0" — valuing explanation, community and new directions over who proves a problem first. The account says OpenAI published 722 model-generated math manuscripts on GitHub on October 6, spanning 372 result families and about 4,000 test problems, with three retracted a day later, and that Lean suffered a run of soundness bugs in summer 2026, including a formally verified claim disproving the Collatz conjecture that was accepted by the kernel and an independent checker. The report says Tao co-signed a declaration by 25 Fields Medalists on AI's misalignment in mathematics and that a body he leads called for halting collaboration with OpenAI, while researchers interviewed said the AI tide is unstoppable and may lift science less than it appears.
