  1. Google expands Personal Intelligence for AI Mode to free users

Google is expanding AI Mode's Personal Intelligence to nearly 200 countries and regions and 98 languages, with eligible free users included. Users can explicitly authorize supported services such as Gmail and Google Photos to provide personal context for answers, and can disconnect those services at any time. Google says Gemini and AI Mode do not directly train on users' entire Gmail inbox or photo library.

  2. Chrome rolls out Gemini-powered autofill from Gmail

Google is rolling out enhanced autofill in Chrome for US users with Gemini in Chrome and Personal Intelligence enabled on desktop, Android, and iOS. 3. Google Adds Ad-Personalization Exception for Personal Intelligence Data

Google’s privacy policy, effective October 16, allows data users make available to eligible Google services to help personalize content, including advertisements, according to Android Authority, TechSpot and other outlets. Gmail, Drive and Google Photos content remains excluded from personalized ads by default, but the exception applies when users connect those services through features such as Personal Intelligence. Google says advertisers do not receive directly identifying details such as names or email addresses without permission.

  4. Gemini Personal Intelligence arrives on Android Auto

Google is rolling out Gemini’s Personal Intelligence feature on Android Auto, with support for vehicles running Google Built-in planned over the coming months. The opt-in feature can use information from connected Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, Search, YouTube, and Google Workspace to tailor responses; Google illustrates this with requests about flight details, appointments, and saved places. Initial access is limited to eligible personal Google accounts for users aged 18 and older, and the feature is unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK, and Nigeria.

  5. Pixel may gain AI-generated animated wallpapers

Android Authority found code in Google’s Pixel-exclusive Custom Icons app for an “Animated wallpaper” feature, codenamed “catsmile,” that appears to generate short animated videos from still images. A preview was visible in an Android 17 QPR2 beta build, while code strings indicate that generation would require an internet connection and could include daily limits. Android Authority said the work-in-progress code does not confirm a public release, and it is unclear whether the feature will use Google’s Veo models.

  6. Google open-sources ML Drift GPU inference engine for on-device AI

Google's AI Edge team announced on October 8 the open-source release of ML Drift, an Apache 2.0-licensed, cross-platform GPU compute engine built for on-device AI/ML inference. The engine abstracts low-level on-device GPU APIs including OpenGL ES, OpenCL, Metal and WebGPU, and serves both as the core GPU acceleration engine inside LiteRT and as a standalone library. Google says ML Drift already runs in production across Chrome, YouTube Shorts, Photos and Meet; it reports up to 12% lower memory overhead than other frameworks in Gemma benchmarks and up to 40% lower average frame latency for Shorts segmentation effects, both vendor claims. Desktop previews on Windows and Linux run through Dawn, Chromium's WebGPU implementation.
