Broadcom in early talks to arrange $50B+ financing for OpenAI custom AI chips
Broadcom is in early talks to arrange a large financing package to help OpenAI buy the custom AI chips the two companies are developing together, according to press reports. Accounts of the size differ: the Wall Street Journal cites more than $50 billion, while Taiwan's TechNews puts it at about $30 billion; sources said no formal financing process has started, terms could change and neither company commented. The move follows Broadcom's $60 billion debt financing for Anthropic — $42 billion in senior secured notes plus $18 billion of junior debt led by Blackstone, which committed $9 billion through a fund. Apollo, Blackstone and Goldman Sachs are among lenders reportedly in talks, and Oracle is also negotiating financing for a large chip purchase; Broadcom's June AI infrastructure financing platform aims to help developers including Anthropic and OpenAI secure more than 20 GW of compute by 2028. Why it matters: If completed, such debt packages would shift AI chip purchases further from corporate capex into capital-markets deals, tightening financial ties between chipmakers and cloud builders.
