Ecosia drops Mistral, bets on open-source models including Chinese ones
Berlin-based search engine Ecosia has dropped France's Mistral in favour of open-source models, including Chinese ones, according to a Politico report. Founder and CEO Christian Kroll said "we are disappointed with the quality of Mistral," which he said now trails competitors by a year. The report says Ecosia had only switched to Mistral from OpenAI in May.
Why it matters: It is a single customer's vendor change, but it shows European teams serving public-sector use cases now consider Chinese models when evaluating open-source options.
