TikTok CEO: AI short-term abilities overestimated, long-term impact underestimated
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said at DBS Group's inaugural Asia Future Forum in Singapore on October 12, speaking with DBS retail banking and wealth management head Sim S. Lim, that the market may overestimate AI's short-term capabilities while underestimating its long-term impact. He predicted that within two to three years AI could drive major breakthroughs in fields such as physics and biotechnology. Citing the paperclip thought experiment, he warned that AI pursuing a single goal without proper limits can produce results misaligned with human intent, and advocated a "human-in-the-loop" approach, urging professionals across fields—engineers, lawyers and others—to use state-of-the-art AI models hands-on to learn their strengths and limits.
