Reddit user finds Terra 6.1 useful for cost-sensitive workflows

AI summary

A Reddit user says OpenAI's Terra 6.1 is useful when a workflow needs a balance of model quality and cost, using it for the first of two sequential API calls and Luna at a low setting for a simpler follow-up. The post also notes sharply mixed forum reactions, with users describing Terra 6.1 as either impressive, inadequate or too costly compared with Sol 6.1.

In-depth insight

The account offers a concrete user-level example of how model routing and benchmark results may diverge from the economics of a multi-step AI workflow, though it provides no independent pricing or benchmark data.

OpenAI's Terra 6.1 is an interesting release because it highlights the economics of AI and how they get captured and missed in benchmarks. YMMV is the key here to why people love/hate it. The forums are full of complaints about Terra being pointless, awful, and awesome, all at the same time. Disappointment usually comes from users who know that Sol 6.1 is a little behind Opus 5.5 and were hoping to close the gap and got a 'worse' model instead. Others were hoping to get Sol quality at a lower cost and realised Terra remains behind Sol, unsurprisingly, but some found it just good and cheap enough to tackle their (usually coding) needs. I found Terra nicely plugs a tough issue I have where I need a fine balance between intelligence and cost. It involves two sequential API calls. I found Terra is able to do a lot of heavy lifting in one shot in the first call and is cheaper than Luna (max), the next best option. And the second follow-up call can be handled by Luna (low), which is the most inexpensive, but limited to straightforward, simple tasks. What benchmarks do not capture well is the difference between tasks and their impact. For my Terra task, the fact that I can move it to a larger model at a low setting with less cost than a smaller model with a max setting pays dividends. I expect it to have better functional and non-functional performance too. Long reasoning chains take time and they sometimes (and they do in my use case) have to make up for limits in world knowledge, i.e., smaller models have less information stored in the NN independently of their intelligence. submitted by /u/IamNotGorbachev [link] [comments]
