Thiel: the model era may never produce a Google
Peter Thiel, an investor in OpenAI and Anthropic, argued in a Berlin conversation with Mathias Döpfner that the model layer may never yield a Google-style monopoly able to capture monopoly value. He said models behave more like substitutable intelligence commodities: switching costs are low, differentiation windows last only months, and as capabilities converge price wars become hard to avoid, leaving much of the created value with users as consumer surplus. The article notes this does not mean the whole AI value chain lacks monopolies, since scarce layers such as chips, compute and power, plus distribution and workflow layers that embed models into hard-to-replace processes, may still earn outsized profits.
If Thiel is right, the key question shifts from who owns the frontier model to whether customers would stay if that model were swapped out.
