Taiwan Power outlines 10-year grid expansion for AI and chip demand
Taiwan Power says Taiwan’s electricity demand is expected to grow 2.5% annually from 2026 to 2035, compared with 1.2% over the past decade, as AI and semiconductor consumption expands. The government plans to add about 26 GW of gas generation, while Taiwan Power will expand 43 substations, build 1,922 km of transmission lines and add roughly 52 GW of transformer capacity over 15 years. TechNews also reports that four gas units totaling 5.2 GW will enter service this year, with 2028–2029 identified as a critical transition period.
Taiwan Power’s plan is a large infrastructure response to electricity demand attributed to AI data centers and semiconductor expansion, combining generation additions with regional grid and substation upgrades.
