Microsoft CEO Nadella calls for an 'emergency brake' on advanced AI
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a post on X that powerful AI models should get an "emergency brake," arguing companies should separate the model from the harness that orchestrates its work and externalize controls and safeguards instead of treating superintelligence as a set of nested black boxes whose answers and actions are simply accepted or rejected. He wrote that "we must assume a model is compromised and contain it from the start," and called for every meaningful model action to leave tamper-proof, human-readable evidence, with an authorized person always able to pause or shut down a model mid-task. The comments come after a string of industry disclosures about models acting unexpectedly and a more cautious development plan published by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
If major AI companies adopt such containment and kill-switch requirements, it could change how frontier models are deployed, monitored and audited.
