Claude Tries a Human-Approved Profit Experiment
AI summary
A Reddit user gave Claude access to a laptop and a $100 spending cap for 12 days, while personally approving actions that send, spend or post. The user reported that Claude launched four Etsy services, generated website mock-ups and cold-email outreach, and abandoned a Chrome-extension revival attempt after finding established replacements. At the reported update, spending stood at $0.91, earnings were $0, and the experiment was scheduled to end Friday at 5 p.m. ET regardless of profit.
In-depth insight
The first-hand account shows Claude carrying out commercial work under explicit legal rules, a spending limit and continuous human approval, while also documenting that user oversight remained necessary.
| On 10/19 I set up an experiment. Claude gets a $100 spending cap and my laptop. On the $20/mo plan...and it does all the work. Personally have been approving anything that sends, spends or posts. Hard rules: nothing illegal, zero fines, no fake reviews, and it says it uses AI wherever a platform asks. Hence below ;) more in a sec...but Friday 5pm ET I will shut the experiment down, profit or not. What it tried interestingly: Reviving Chrome extensions: pulled from the store in August. Killed on day 1 at $0, because every popular one already had a replacement. Didn't seem worth it, so it trashed it. Proof-first cold email: Found 48 small inns, motels and shops whose websites break on a phone, built each one a real redesign mock-up first, then wrote a short note with the link but I sent them. Was an interesting idea at heart, but one that was destined to fail unfortunately. Replies so far: 0 and the lesson: showing the work up front doesn't fix a stranger's inbox trust. Expected. Etsy services, which is pushed live (as of now): a holiday listing refresh for other Etsy sellers ($12), a phone-screen website audit ($24), a one-page site for your shop ($79) and a guest-guide site for vacation-rental hosts ($39). And beautifully I must add it designed the listings and photos and it writes each delivery. Let's see but time is running out. So far the score: $0.91 spent, $0 earned there. The weirdest part is what it can't do. It can't create accounts, type card numbers or send an email without me. Expected, and safe. So nearly all its value is labor and the bottleneck is me clicking "send". I'll make sure to update if it makes a sale before Friday and if you sell on Etsy, run a small-business site or host a rental, write any suggestions below! *Claude drafted this post too.
