AI Data Growth Drives an HDD Market Reversal
A report from Dolphin Research says AI-generated data is increasing demand for high-capacity HDDs, which it describes as the final resting place for most long-term cloud data. It reports that HDD industry revenue rose 47% year over year in Q2 2026, with shipment capacity up 29% and average price per GB up 14%. The analysis also examines HAMR technology, constrained component supply, and pricing power across Seagate, Western Digital and Toshiba.
The reported reversal suggests that expanding AI datasets are creating sustained demand for low-cost, high-capacity storage even as SSDs take over performance-sensitive workloads.
