Google's SynthID Detector opens to all, now reads OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao watermarks
Google has launched the SynthID Detector website (synthid.com), letting anyone free of charge check whether an image, video or audio clip was AI-generated or AI-edited, after signing in with a Google, OpenAI or Apple account. The tool was previously limited to journalists, media professionals and researchers; it now detects SynthID watermarks from Google, OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple support "coming soon." Google says Gemini alone has embedded SynthID in over 180 billion images and videos plus 240,000 years of audio, and that it handles roughly 1 million verification requests a day. It still cannot catch all AI content, watermarks can be stripped, and it does not distinguish fully AI-created media from media merely edited with AI.
Cross-vendor AI watermark checks are now available to ordinary users instead of a single vendor's chatbot, though the patchwork of standards keeps a universal detector out of reach.
