Developer Uses Claude Opus 5.5 to Build the Stone Language

AI summary

A Reddit developer said Claude Opus 5.5 helped them create Stone, a Pythonic programming language intended to combine elements of Python, Rust, C++26, and Ada. They also reported building a usable compiler while learning about compiler lowering and intermediate representations, and using Claude for fuzzing and unit testing. The account is anecdotal and not independently benchmarked, and the developer said they continued to encounter weekly usage limits.

In-depth insight

The report provides a concrete example of Claude Opus 5.5 being used in an AI-assisted compiler and language-development project, although the claimed productivity and learning benefits come from one developer's experience.

i've always wanted to make my own compiler, but with the free time i have, it would've taken months to years to build a usable one. opus has definitely gotten me there, and i've genuinely learned a lot about compilers, lowering, IR, and much more stone is a pythonic (yet another one) language that is meant to be a hybrid between python, rust, and c++ 26/ada. it aims to be fast, "safe", and readable, meaning the compiler is doing most of the work eventually i want to get to a point where it is trivial to go from requirements to code and tests, and vice versa; if we aren't going to be looking at code in the near future, might as well bake the abstractions into the language! in terms of workflow, i've been using graphify with opus 5.5 and frequently compacting to come back to sessions after a while. i've still been hitting weekly limits but those two have been allowing me to do much more. i also have been making opus practice extreme TDD w/ fuzz testing and unit testing, and plan to start integrating specs driven soon as well i didnt want stone to be "better than X at Y", i just thought it would be cool to start using my own language at my job, and be able to say that i built this and the ecosystem around it. you can just build stuff now!! https://github.com/tarolling/stone submitted by /u/tarolling [link] [comments]
