Apple Silicon could undercut cloud token costs for enterprise AI

AI summary

A 9to5Mac analysis argues that Macs priced as one-time hardware purchases may become more economical than variable cloud-token bills as agentic tools increase usage. Citing Asymco figures, it says a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Max and 128GB of unified memory could pay back its cost in 7 to 14 months under a high-usage scenario, while emphasizing that the case depends on local open-weight models being capable enough for routine work.

In-depth insight

The analysis frames a hybrid enterprise AI strategy in which local open-weight models handle routine work on Apple Silicon while frontier cloud models handle harder tasks.

Apple hardware costs more than it did a year ago, and if you have purchased a fleet recently, you are feeling it. Now, one thing I should mention: Macs have not risen in price with inflation or performance. If you think about what a Mac mini or MacBook Air cost when they launched vs. today, I would still say they are extremely affordable. With that being said, there’s a scenario taking shape in the enterprise where the price of a Mac matters a lot less than it used to. If open-weight AI models become a real part of how companies work, Apple Silicon might end up looking basically free compared to the token bill it supplements.
