Anthropic Manager Drops Coding Interviews for His Team
Anthropic engineering manager Felix Rieseberg removed traditional coding interviews from his team’s hiring process, arguing that Claude now performs better than candidates on small React and assembly exercises. He said he has not settled on a complete alternative for evaluating engineers who work well with AI. In the meantime, he reviews résumés and portfolios for small prototypes that demonstrate taste, empathy and principled thinking. The change applies only to his team; Anthropic’s broader candidate guidance still asks applicants not to use Claude in live interviews or take-home tests unless instructed otherwise.
Rieseberg’s decision provides a concrete, team-level example of AI coding capabilities prompting an engineering team to reconsider traditional assessments. It is not an Anthropic-wide policy, and Rieseberg has not established a complete replacement for evaluating AI-capable candidates.

Anthropic engineering manager Felix Rieseberg has dropped the coding interview from his team’s hiring. He explained the change in a blog post on Tuesday, 27 October, titled “Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers”.
Rieseberg has led engineering for Claude.ai, Claude Code Desktop and Anthropic’s Cowork tool, according to his bio. He previously worked at Notion, Stripe, Slack and Microsoft.
“There’s no more point in giving you a little React challenge than there is in quizzing people about assembly; Claude is now better at both,” Rieseberg wrote.
