HPE's Spaceborne Computer-4 to run first lunar HPC benchmarks and AI tests
Astrolab plans to send its uncrewed FLIP rover to the lunar south pole on the Griffin-1 mission later in 2026, carrying HPE's Spaceborne Computer-4, according to Tom's Hardware and IT之家 AI. HPE says the fanless, self-contained module will run what it calls the first high performance computing benchmarks on the lunar surface, including HPCG, along with large language model retrieval-augmented generation, vision inference, LiDAR processing and an AI services container. NASA is to run its FLUID neural network and test a tuned LLM, while Deloitte tests its Silent Shield intrusion-detection system; HPE's "first" claims and the launch schedule remain vendor assertions.
HPE and Astrolab present the flight as a test of whether HPC and AI inference can run at the lunar "far edge" rather than depending on low-bandwidth Earth links, with the benchmark results still to come from the mission itself.
