Wang Jian and Li Jianshu: AI won't end math, may open a new world
At the main forum of the sixth Intelligent Computing Innovation Forum on October 14, Zhejiang Lab director Wang Jian and Li Jianshu, dean of Zhejiang University's Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, discussed "AI+Maths: Evolution and Eternity." Li argued that mathematics stands at a juncture comparable to the eve of calculus: AI can help mathematicians cross long-standing barriers faster and reveal a broader mathematical landscape, changing research paradigms and training, while demand for top mathematicians should grow rather than shrink. Wang stressed that AI's own methodology has undergone deep change, and that a tighter union of math and AI could push AI reasoning to a new stage. Both called for an open research platform that does not depend on any single company's models, involving research institutes, mathematics institutes, private firms and individuals.
The two academicians frame AI-and-math around research organization, not just model capability, pointing to the need for open, public scientific infrastructure behind AI for Science.
