Survey: 36% of workers hide AI gains, fearing more work or layoffs
TechNews cites a survey by workplace AI company Glean finding that 36% of 6,000 digital workers in the United States, Britain and Australia conceal how much AI actually helps their work. The report says employees worry that telling managers they use AI to sharply cut work hours could bring higher targets or be taken as a sign their team can be trimmed. It also cites a 2024 Microsoft and LinkedIn survey saying more than half of employees who use AI at work fear looking replaceable when using it on important tasks, and notes that Norway's government and eight employer and union organizations signed an AI agreement on October 2 running through the end of 2029 that stresses employee participation and shared gains but, according to the report, does not guarantee pay rises, job retention or distribution of cost savings.
The report argues that companies want staff to share AI productivity practices while workers fear that doing so invites higher targets or layoffs, a trust gap that complicates internal AI rollouts.
