Solo developer's AI-assisted Pokémon survivor game pokebonk goes viral
pokebonk, a free browser-based fan game that blends Pokémon with Vampire Survivors-style survival combat, drew a flood of players after its October 16 test launch, and its servers crashed the next day, forcing developer Charcher to upgrade them, according to Game Tea House (游戏茶馆) via Huxiu AI. Leaderboard data cited in the report puts registered players above 181,000, with daily growth at times exceeding 40,000. Charcher said scenes, trees, rocks, 3D models, visual effects, interface art and music were AI-generated, that the Pokémon images were fan-made and the 3D models produced with Blender and Opus, and that he spent about two weeks tuning the game; the project is non-commercial and he has said he would take it down if anyone complained.
The report frames pokebonk as a case of AI-assisted asset generation shortening solo development, while noting that most AI-made games on Steam earn little and that the game's AI involvement and player numbers rest on the developer's account and leaderboard data.
