   Google Ties K-12 Search Access to AI Services

   Google plans to make Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search off by default for K-12 student accounts in early 2027, giving administrators control over which services students can use. Schools that fully disable Google's AI services would also lose access to Google Search, with no traditional non-AI Search option. Schools that permit AI can choose standard Search with AI Overviews and AI chats or Guided Learning. The proposal drew backlash from educators, while politicians including Bernie Sanders, Zohran Mamdani and Lina Khan criticized Google's use of its search position.
