   As AI gaffes pile up, users stop hiding their AI use

   A translated commentary on Huxiu AI examines “AI shame”: many people depend on AI daily but are reluctant to admit using it for their most important work. It cites recent embarrassments, including an AI prompt left inside a printed novel and an AI follow-up question appended to a Weibo holiday post by commentator Hu Xijin, who has since openly acknowledged relying on AI. The piece references a 2024 Microsoft and LinkedIn survey of 31,000 people across 31 countries in which 52% of AI users said they would not admit using it for important tasks, and a study in which seven detectors flagged 61.3% of 91 TOEFL essays by Chinese test-takers as AI-generated. It also notes Hebei University has opened an investigation into a doctoral thesis reported for fabricated references and suspected AI generation, arguing that use of AI need not be shameful but output must be checked.
