  1. US Utilities Tighten Grid Rules for AI Data Centers

US utilities and grid operators are demanding higher rates, longer contracts, collateral and steep engineering study fees from data-center developers to screen out speculative or duplicate grid requests. TechRadar, citing Wood Mackenzie and other reporting, says US developers have requested 1,066GW of connections and that utilities are expected to commit to about 28%. After Exelon introduced transmission security agreements, its high-probability data-center load fell from 18GW at the end of 2025 to about 11GW in the second quarter. The report does not establish how much of the requested capacity would serve AI workloads rather than other data-center uses.

  2. Voltus raises $225M Series D to turn homes and batteries into data centre power

Voltus, a San Francisco company that runs a virtual power plant, raised a $225 million Series D led by Generation Investment Management, with Activate Capital and energy trader Vitol as co-leads and Broadscale Group, Climate Investment, NGP, Ajax Strategies and All Aboard Fund also participating. Voltus pays businesses and homes to cut, shift or supply power when the grid needs it, then sells that flexible capacity into electricity markets; it says its platform holds 8.5 GW today and targets 20 GW by 2030 across the US and Canada, and it did not disclose a valuation. The money will expand its Bring Your Own Capacity programme, which includes a three-year June deal with Google for up to 100 MW a year in PJM and an August agreement with Sunrun to supply home solar and battery capacity for Voltus deals with AI hyperscalers.

  3. Google signs 20-year nuclear PPA with Constellation to add 890 MW for AI data centers

Google has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy, acting as anchor customer for more than $4.3 billion of upgrades to 11 nuclear units across Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey that are expected to add 890 MW of new capacity to the PJM grid, with the first uprate due by 2028 and the full amount targeted before the end of 2032. The companies also signed a separate 15-year energy supply agreement covering 2,700 MW of Constellation's existing PJM generation, plus a five-year technology deal under which Constellation will expand its use of Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise. Google ties the projects to rising electricity demand from its AI data centers; the article cites IEA projections of nearly 2% annual US demand growth through 2030, with data centers accounting for about half of the increase.
